Topic "Rule Changes...and it's kind of a thing." a message from TheBeatnikMick

And planeswalkers did the same thing to me when I first got back into Magic at the beginning of SoM, and I was all against it (maybe a little because I didn't have any) but I have grown to not only use, but love em (woot woot Ajani and Sorin!). It may change your strategy, but that's not a bad thing. It's going to make your strategy stronger, instead of just relying on clone killing. And I like the idea of cloning my opponent's commander and smacking their face with it.
edited by TheBeatnikMick on 5/23/2013

Topic "Rule Changes...and it's kind of a thing." a message from dragonfire60

@ beatnick

I get it. You're telling me to play creatures and turn them sideways. Or play cards that are made to kill walkers.

And on. The surface, I agree that that is good. It makes the game more engaging, because now everything has a more specific use. But here's the thing: it makes my individual cards less flexible. When I play bant control, as I often do, Jace, aot is not only good against agro but also against those decks which would bring in a memory adept against me. Now, he isn't. I'm not saying that that is a bad thing, but it will not make the game any more fun. More active, maybe. But not necessarily more fun.

I like to think of magic as a chess game, and using walkers defensively and offensively as well as for their abilities is a strategy that I and many other players have employed. It is something we will have to adapt to. I don't know if I like it, but I'll deal with it.

But I'll concede that geist can be dealt with. He's not as bad as thrun. Thinking about him without a clone kill makes me sad.

What if you have Architect of Thought out, now I can't play my damn Memory Adept unless I take your Jace out, and the game is no longer fun. I only have two in my deck; why should I be sacrificing a one of only two cards that I have in my deck, a really damn good card, one that isn't designed to do what I'm paying five mana for it to do? Why? The game suddenly isn't fun. I almost want to rage quit. Attack Jace, or any planeswalker, Dreadbore 'em! Put some pants on your new GoST clone and attack for more than six. You are literally using a spell (that in EDH, could be much better played on some fatty creature that you or your opponent controls) to do something it isn't designed or mana-costed to do; it makes no sense! These rules changes will make for better games and more engaging strategy.

And flavor wise, think of it this way: You're not summoning the same legendary creatures or planeswalkers. I mean, if we're traveling from other planes, why not have different dimensions for all these planes? I don't think MTG can really ever be stretched to far when it comes to imaginative explanations of what the hell is happening on these planes, on this "battlefield" we're fighting on.
Topic "really needing some help," a message from Bearcats

I'm going to go ahead and Disagree with you, KOB. Mono colored decks are probably the best things to learn on, whether it be how to play Magic, or how to build a deck. They're simple and straightforward. I'm pretty sure the OP isnt looking to win any tournaments at the moment, so a mono colored deck is probably right up his alley. Even so, mono colored decks have and can still do very well in tournys. Heck, there was a Mono red deck at the Dragon's maze Pro Tour! Duel decks can work a lot better because (especially in this current block of standard) there are a lot of cards with synergy with cards of other colors (Avacyn's Pilgrim and Loxodon Smiter for example). So I wouldn't suggest that you stray too far away from Mono colored for now, OP. I havent looked at your posted deck yet, but i'll try to see if I can help ya out once I do. I will agree with KOB in the fact that a 3 color deck should not be your first deck, especially because those colors together call for a lot of strategy and advanced planning. A good multicolor combo for your first deck would be either Green/White, Red/Black, or White/Black. (Try to stay away from blue at first, because nothing good ever comes from blue...)
Hope this helped in your decisions!

hello I read your post and recognized a situation I was in not long ago. I played at the dragon's maze prerelease and lost EVERY ROUND, this was was annoying so I got obsessed with getting better looking at forums and asking my friends who play at tournements. This helped a lot. Where as my knowledge might be limited by the fact that I havn't been playing long I do know some things.

1 make sure your deck goes together

2 have three's and four's of cards rather than one's or two's because why have a single card that you won't rely on then change it to a card that you only have three or two of? youll be more likely to draw something and have a better stategy

3 There is one thing that I dont agree with himm..... dont do a mono color deck. Mono's are yes more simple BUT thats their problem. you are limited to only black which will have mill and extort and plain black in there and even some scavenge. Many of my friends have told me to make a duel deck instead of tri or mono. Duel (if you do tip 1 and 2) are easish to make compared to tri, and they have more options for combo's and are in that sense easier than mono. Yes mono might be cheaper but if you make a duel color on a deck builder (I recommend mtgdeckbuilder.net (chuckle)) then you wont have to spend money on an alright mono and then a good duel or tri. duel also gets you better at building decks faster. himmichelle sorry if I completly told off your third tip, youve been helpful before but I think I have to disagree here.

Topic "Blue/Black Zombie Deck Card Choice?" a message from minifigmaster125

Hey all, I'm pretty new to the MTG scene, so I apologize in advance if I make any serious faux pas around here.

Anyway, I'm building a Blue/Black Zombie deck, and so far, here is what I have:

http://mtgdeckbuilder.net/Decks/ViewDeck/651290

For some reason, I can't get the DECK html tags to show my deck here. Sorry.

So, as of right now, it's a pretty terrible deck. Most of the cards are pretty mana heavy, and I've found it to be a little slow. What do you guys suggest I do to help with this? I'm definitely looking to buy extra copies of cards and get rid of the random 1 or two copies of cards I have, but I'm not sure which cards to get copies of and which to abandon. I'm looking to get more copies of Ghoulcaller's Chant, and 2 more Diregraf Captain. I have 4 copies of Skinrender, which I definitely wanna put in, and I'm thinking of replacing at least Renegade Demon and Bloodhunter Bat with 'em. I'd also like to keep the Skaabs in there, I'm just not sure of how to go about doing that without making the mana dependence of this deck off the charts. It would help to know of any 1 or 2 drops that would work well with this deck besides the awkward ones I have which I may wanna replace, like Tormented Soul.
Alright, I understand what you're trying to accomplish in the deck; Extort your opponent to death with huge creatures. One card that I'd reccommend if you're going for that is Obzedat, Ghost Council. He's great with draining your opponant every turn, and works wonders with Faithmender. If you take a look at my extort deck (http://www.mtgdeckbuilder.net/Decks/ViewDeck/608452), you'll see a lot of low cost creatures and spells that will all allow for huge extorts. If you're aiming for Defensive creatures, Doomed Traveler, basilica guards, and High Priest of Penance are all good cheap choices. Your land base is definitely better as well.
As for Vault of the Archangel, that will really help when you have a bunch of little guys out, and your opponent is charging at you with a huge trampler, or an army of tokens. I think that 2 copies, however, will probably be the best. Its not a card that you want to rely on, it should just be an option.

Your change to attacking with extort is a pretty good idea, but you went about it kind of the wrong way. I feel that you went for the more defensive build. I mean, kingpin's pet is a good attacker, but you don't really have much else to attack with, save Teysa. High Priest is a defensive threat, Pontiff and Faithmender are both defenders, and you should never risk your crypt ghast by attacking with it.
If you're looking to attack, use cards like Basilica Screecher, Thrull Parasite, and Treasury Thrull.

Hope I helped with this, and it made the slightest bit of sense... :P

If you find you're versing someone running black THEN you swap your Dooms for Murders :3

You might also want to invest in check lands. They're easy to use in two colour decks and are usually pretty reliable. Drop either a plains or swamp T1, then all your check lands will come in untapped and you have a free choice of either black or white mana instantaneously, without having to stall the game with guildgates. Isolated Chapel is the checkland for black/white and cost me ~$8 when I bought em (costlier than what you wanted, but waaaay cheaper than a shock land). The cheaper option would be to go for a bounceyland so Orzhov Basilica is your guy - costs $1 at my store

Your mana curve is a little rollercoastery as well, but it's not too big a deal.

I've found that newbies tend to have a standard deck of 60 cards, BUT (and that's a big but) it consists of singles/odd double of cards they really like. They might be awesome cards, but if you have 1/60 chance of drawing it what's the point?
I myself started off with quite an abstract deck filled with singles or doubles - it would still occasionally win, but it would mostly lose.

So here's a couple of things to keep in mind when building your deck:
- Figure out what you want your deck to do. To do this you can either pick a card you really like, and start thinking up combos from there OR you can go the newbie route and create something easy like tribal, or even join a guild and all the hard work has been done for you.
- Play your deck for a bit, and figure out which cards are leaving you internally saying "man, I wish I pulled ____ insteada ___ right now". Figure out what saves your bacon, what hits hard, what hits fast and most importantly
- Make sure your cards fit with one another! For example why have a mill deck with one card that allows you to gain 4 life? It's kinda random, and that card coulda been another mill card! You see where I'm going?

Also, you might wanna start out with a mono-coloured deck. It's cheaper because you don't need to buy shock/check lands AAAND easier for you to make ^^

Topic "Manna Issues" a message from KillerOrzhovBee

Hey I made a weird combonation of attack or extort, depending on cards or your sideboard switchs and stuff. I was wondering if you like the change or if you think its worse. I have a whole write up on the strategy. Wondering if this works. I dont know if I like it better or not, wondering your opion, plaease rate to (run the deck against yours or other good decks) I would like to keep some extort because I feel like that helps the deck a lot. Im not sure though. please help

http://www.mtgdeckbuilder.net/Decks/ViewDeck/654154

thanks again

(remember I use a lot more swamps than plains)
edited by KillerOrzhovBee on 5/22/2013

Topic "Manna Issues" a message from KillerOrzhovBee

Hey thanks for the advice, but I am not sure if all of it is good so tell me if I'm miss understanding. First with lands like Vault of the Archangel. I feel like this land is mainly for orzhov decks that are aggresive and that attack a lot. Life link and death touch for 4 manna or just one colorless manna. I dont feel like that is for my deck, I do see how it would be useful for deffending but if Im using my manna to extort the crap out of my opponents would I really save the 4 manna? Maybe I should. (one last thing with Vault of Archangel is that it is kinda expensive but I could fit it in my deck)

On to teysa Envoy of Ghosts. I feel like this card helps me defend and or deal some damage to help beat my opponent(s) If you think the Vault of Archangel would help in my deck, why wouldnt Teysa? (Im just curious, havnt been playing magic too long, you might know more than me but Im just stating problems that I might see with your advice so you can clear those up) Teysa helps make my opponents not want to attack as much and she helps deal defend some and deal that slight amount of damage that I need, especially with the ghosts.

(manna I will look at but I feel like I need a little more but your comments on manna were helpful.

Sidenote: my problem with manna isnt in the middle or end of game, its only from turn 1 to 3 or 4 or 5 usually only 3 or 4 when I have troubles.

Next, I dont know if you know the strategy around my deck. I pretty much want Crypt Ghast out( you didnt argue about him) because he explodes my manna for high cost cards and extort. Pontiff of Blight is a card that I feel has a big spot in my deck becausewith the extra manna from Crypt Ghast, he can give me tons of extort which decimates opponents. (Debt to Deathless with Crypt Ghast alone will do well too ) and then lastly, Rhox Faithmender. Some dont feel like he has a great place in my deck, but they don't realize that when I extort 5 times he allows me to gain 10 life so decks that have a big build up at the end of game will not kill me because even though they have tons of creatures I gain a substaintual amount of life. Extort 10 times and gain 20 life. Play Debt of the Deathless and get X times 2 times 2 life.

Last thing. I mentioned earlier in this reply that I have struggles from turn 1-4 if I have problems. Now I I end up paying for Teysa or Pontiff with only 4 or 3 manna because of Crypt ghast. I usually get crypt ghast and he helps my manna from turn 4 onwards its just I dont have the manna cards in my hand all of the time. (15-20% maybe) I dont think my manna cards are the problem, but I think it is the actual manna. If you can help me out more from the details I have given you that would be great (sorry if I wrote a lot) Have you play tested my deck against another (just wondering , if you havnt maybe you want to)

Thanks Again
