Community set
A collection of cards that are cool!!!

Hello MTG Deck Builders! Hi, and welcome to my Blog, most of you are probably wondering what a 'community set' is, well, I can tell you all about it and more, but first I wanted to ask you all a question; have you ever had a really cool idea of a card that they should print in a set of MTG? Well, here could be a great chance to have a fun and interesting experience where people can share ideas and have fun! A community set is a group of people (a community) pulling together a group of cards for MTG cards into a fun set. I've been playing on this idea for quite some time and I thought that maybe it was time to release my ideas. Some of the things I have come up with are pretty cool I think, but you know, I need help, and I thought this would be a great place to be. Now, I have a basic back set for the world, and some of the new mechanics, soon I'll tell you all the new Planes you are on! This is the realm of Novaline. Novaline is a moderately peaceful world, with lush landscapes and vigorous mountainsides. The people have been at peace with nature for many years, but something has caused the King, Genis, to begin some campaign against the other lords of the realm. No one is really quite sure what he is after, but he promises that the quest for the Architects of the Forge is within reach. His attacks have aroused the Dwarves of the Northern Highlands, the Elves of the Eastern Forests, the Necromancers of the Ebony Wet Lands and the Ice Magi from the Island Terilinock. As war breaks out among the people of the realm, slaves are turned into Gladiators, so the people are rallied. But in a fight between Cantor, and an Elf gladiator, Cantors Spark emerges and he obliterates the coliseum. Cantor, who now is hunted by the high king, springs lose all the gladiators he can to begin a rebellion upon the Royal Throne. In the Southern swamp lands, the necromancer raises his wife, and when she is reborn, her own spark is brought too, and she sees a world in which she is going to kill, and bring back the dead. The Elves old feud between them and the Dwarves has come back, and they are now at war over the precious metal Mytherial, a metal both of them use to create their swords. The wars between the Elves and Dwarves have gone mass scale, entire mountains and forests being destroyed, laying everything destroyed. Now the last of the Ice Magi are beginning to come into war, defending themselves against the Tyrant ruler Genis. There isn’t much left for this world if wars continue to break out. You may be the only chance to save the people of this realm! This is the backdrop to the story, and I have come up with set Mechanics for us to work on!

GREAT IDEA!

Except we've already made one, actually, we've made two and honestly the project really watered down over time. By the end there weren't many people still on board once initial excitement cooled down and it was time to get to work. I think it's still too early for us to do another one, and more importantly, we'll need some serious organization this time around. If this is to work out, there absolutely positively needs to be people in charge, the democracy system lead up to confusion last time and huge slowdown because no one had any specific job. If someone is willing to take the time to work an organization structure, tell everyone their roles, deadlines, plan out the set or organize a committee for doing so and etc I would gladly join the project, but I doubt anyone is willing to do that or put in the time to do it in a way that this'll work out well.

I might partake. I'm quite good at nonbroken cards. I have a plan for a homemade Archer deck with my own new mechanic. Give me time, I'll make some fair mechanics. But like yshabash said, only if others are willing to take part.

I've got an idea for the Dwarves: Rummage: Whenever you sacrifice a land, {insert effect here].

Here's one simple idea.

Dwarven Rampager (1)(R)
Creature-Drawrf Berserker {U}

Rummage: Whenever you sacrifice a land, you may destroy target artifact or enchantment.

Sacrifice a land: ~ gets +1/+0 until end of turn

That's one card.

I'm not sure how this would work, but I definitely want to be a part of it. You can contact me via this site, I come here almost every day. I have a lot of ideas, and would love to help with this, it seems awesome.

@everybody; I remember the building of the old community set: I wish I had done more, and if it were to begin anew, I would love to help! However, no offense to Nazmith, but the process would have to be democratic. We may use your plane and your story, but I think having those who want to instead submit their own plane and storyline, and then have the community vote on it.

@Yshabash: since then, we have had so many of our most active members come to the site! Keir, Subject16, magicviking, Pope, Ratface, and popboom are all extremely active and could probably contribute in many ways (not twisting anyone's arm), and we didn't have them last time around. Although yes, we would need a hierarchy of people in charge in order to get the project moving.

@Ratface; Broken as hell. Repeatable removal for 2 mana? OP.

@manaleak; Ratfaces' card wouldnt be that broken in a set with few artifacts and enchantments, but it would be 'broken as hell' in all the other formats

@chinn1995403
Whenever you make your own set, you can't decide the balance. The game's balance has been decided by Wizards, and all other cards are guidelines. We can't have a set where all commons are 13/13 for 1B. Sure, it would be balanced in the set but it doesn't match the preexisting balance. The card would be broken in any other set, and if we use that card then we will have to make every card in the set just as broken, which will be even worse.

yshabash's so right.
Sadly, my pc's hard disk broke down recently, and I lost all the datas of our previous attempt to a community set, with almost no chance of recovering them.
I would be glad to take part of a new project, if well organized as yshabash said

wow, I'm surprised this many people replied. I'm willing to try to make this work and create any form of a world for people to play in, and make this into an organized group thing, and I'm more then certain the main people woho are on this sight daily would be willing to be part of the commity. I suppose the first thying to do is too really see who thinks we should make one first, so vote below? If we get enough people i can totaly start organizing everything!

I would be interested in creating cards, and/or being a project leader. I have a bunch of cards and concepts made up already, if that's any help.

Also, will the community simply be creating a set, or will we create a theme and world for it? And if so, would there be separate project leaders for playability and for flavor?

Count me in ;)

Creating a brand new world and building a block around it like we tried to do some months ago would be really cool... Organization is the key :D
Agree in voting someone to lead the works.

Well, I'd love to be the, not to say 'leader' but the overseer and part of some kind of commision for this set. I suppose that we should try to find the world's (Or plane's :P) background.

That would be the best place to start with the set, that way we kind find out what 'groups' of people there are (Like RTR's guilds or Avacyn's Zombies and Vampire colors).
From there we can try to work on each creature or color orgnization to make the mechanics for those colors! Then we could build a group of people who would judge the cards (Not creating their own, to avoid everyone voting on their own cards) with a small group of people who create base cards (Cards that caren't created by ONE person but is a group total) then have the Blog with the mechanic, color scheme, creature types (Ideal creature types, that it) and background. Give people two weeks to have everyone post two ideas of their own personal thoughts, then a whole new post for people to vote on there favorites after the judges (As explained ealier) have picked the finalest!

Following the dissolution of the previous set, I'd love to partake in a brand new project. Hopefully, we'll learn from our mistakes and use them to build a better set. Of course, in all honesty, most of the problems that the previous set had suffered was due of my own disorganization; in specifics, I didn't build as great of a set skeleton as I should have, and thus the set was filled with inconsistencies, problems regarding types, cmc, color balance, card balance etc.

Luckily for you guys, I upgraded my skeleton for use in my own card set, and with some tweaks, we could effectively translate it to this project. Now if I can simply find the proper documents in my own hard drive...

Well, that is good :D I really want to get started! I think for the weekend let's just let it bubble though! Everyone should be able to go to their weekly FNM, and by all means kick some ass! I really was looking for people to help me build one that i have been working on for a while, and i had only recently come up qwith possibly the final mechanics that i personaly had come up with. If people wanted to know, I'm willing to post more ideas and cards from the set i have on a Document.

Alright, so I guess we're doing it. I'm sorry to say but, honestly, I believe we should do what we did last time and actually pick the plane, tribes and ect. We also need to vote on people to lead stuff. Having a single person lead the project seems like too much, if specific people however led certain parts then it would work out much better I think. Here are some posts I can think of:

Project Leader:
Card Design Leader:
Story Design Leader:
Editing Leader:
Graphic Design Leader:

Each of these leaders are assigned to lead their own section, here's each section's outline:

Project Section: Organize everything, these guys will make project and organizational decisions, so you are expected to follow them to some extent. Please be aware that large decisions will still be decided by democratic vote, but these guys will set up those votes.

Card Design Section: Simple enough, this will likely be a large section as it will have the responsibility of making a large number of cards that ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY HAVE TO BE BALANCED (but edit section can also help out here.) These guys will also decide set mechanics and make legendary cards, but all legendary cards will be commissioned by story team. Card Design makes the card itself, but we can't have a random legendary creature out of nowhere, all legendaries (yes this includes planeswalkers) must have some kind of connection to the set as a whole.

Continuation from last post:

Story Design Section: Designs the stories. Looks to be an easy job but you have to remember, these guys will do a lot of minor decision as to the plane, legendary creatures, planeswalkers and many other things. This group is more powerful than you think, but it is important to have major story decisions be made by democratic vote, or at least a vote done with the members of the section (we can't have one guy decide to make a planeswalker, the section as a whole must approve that planeswalker.)

Edit Section: These guys just go around telling everyone else how much they suck (that was a joke.) In all seriousness, these guys just look over the work of all the other sections and makes sure no kind of wonky decisions are happening, offer second advice and try to communicate the problems of one section to another that it may concern (although project section should probably be doing that too.)

Remember that a person can be part of more than one section! Heck, I'm probably going to try to be active in almost all of them.

So what do you guys think of the sections?

so are we going to have a theme like 2 races fighting for control of a plane or a plane in chaos because of something. or is it going to be just a set full of cards like the core sets?

Love your sections :D
I'm willing to be part of more than a section too :P
But what does graphic design section do exactly? I mean, do we want someone to actually make the arts for our cards? That would be just epic, let me say.

@TwoStars
Don't be so strict with yourself, it was a difficult job to do all alone, and you actually did well :)

@Ganondalf93

Sorry, I seem to have missed that section. My original intention was to make art of cards, planeswalker guides and the like (including set symbol) but considering how little art we had last time it would probably be best to not have this section since I don't think we'd have enough artists to have in it. Making the set symbol can just be transferred to the responsibility of the card section, but it needs to make sense store-wise as to what the symbol is going to be as well so it will need cooperation between those two groups.
