Winner is the Judge #4
Size the day!
Posted on: 2/25/2013 1:08 PM By Subject16

Welcome to Winner is the Judge, episode one!

1) How does this Work?

Simples. I give you a theme, you make your own custom card in accordance with that theme, I judge the cards, and whoever wins the competition also wins the rights to create and judge the next WitJ blog.

This week's Theme is: Size Matters!!!

("Size" isn't anything precise here, this could mean high power/toughness, converted mana costs, or the size of an army, have fun with the variability of this theme.)

2) How do I do this?

Also simple, post your card (this includes Name, Cost, Type  [And Subtypes if they exist], [Rarity isn't necessary, but it can help determine the power balance of the card], Rules Text [Flavor Text if you want to.])

Here's an example:

Godly Reverence 3WW

Enchantment - Uncommon

At the beginning of your end step, you may gain life equal to the highest converted mana cost among creatures you control.

"Provoke the Gargantuans and they will seek out revenge. Worship them, and they will reward you." -Mayael the Anima.

3) How do I know whether I've done enough?

I will be judging each card according to several criteria:

Balance: Whether the card itself has balance when it comes to the cost/power/rarity ratio. Also, whether or not the card feels like something WotC could create and print.

Creativity: It's not every day you get to create your own card, so be creative, be extravagant, be exotic (but remember to keep it balanced). You card must be able to have an interesting effect on the board. If you're having troubhink "what WotC could reveal before Spoiler Season" creative.

Flavor: Flavor always adds that little bit of "extra nice stuff" to a card, be it something funny like Goblin Razerunners or Fodder Cannon, or something badass like Last Word or Near-Death Experience.

Form: This is an easy criteria, try to word your card in accordance to how a real card would be worded. Try not to think of Aspect of Wolf when doing your wording.

4) How do I know whether I haven't disqualified myself by accident? (aka the Rules!!!)

(The rules can vary a little with each judge, here's what I am proposing.)

1) One entry per person. This means you have one shot at this, so make it count!

2) Be ready to win. This means you have to be prepared to become the judge for next week (ie post the fifth installment, choose a theme, and judge during the whole week and ultimately choose a new winner).

5) How did the others fair?

Here are the past winners:

Week One (Theme: Flip/Transforming cards).

Trusted Advisor (2)(U/B)

Creature: Human Wizard

At the beginning of each upkeep, each player draws a card. Then if a player has eight or more cards in hand, flip Trusted Advisor.

0/3

//

Evil Vizier

Creature: Demon Wizard

At the beginning of each upkeep, Evil Vizier deals 5 damage to each player with less than seven cards in their hand.

4/3

Week Two (Theme: Ninja's).

Juki, Xi's Assassin (1UB)

Legendary Creature: Rat Ninja

Hexprood

1B: Prevent all combat damage that ~ would deal this turn. Put X 1/1 black rat ninja creature token onto the battlefield under your control where X is the amount of damage prevented this way.
"Juki discovered that being untraditional had its advantages."

2/2

Week Three (Theme: The Clock is Ticking)

Phyrexian Growth Vats (4)
Artifact (Mythic Rare)
When Phyrexian Growth Vats enters the battlefield, each player gets a poison counter and put a -1/-1 counter on each creature.
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player untaps Phyrexian Growth Vats and gains control of it. Double the number of counters on that player and on each permanent he or she controls.
T, sacrifice a permanent: Proliferate.

Good Luck to all of you!

@Nazsmith
Please, don't do planeswalkers. They are hard to make good and usually all the entries are grossly overpowered, copy stuff we've already seen and have no real of development to them. If you go about making a character, it requires a lot of work and during these card entry contests, I find most people like to sit down, draft something and post it just for fun. We may have a legendary character/planeswalker competition but if so I would imagine 95% of the entries wouldn't be anywhere near at the level or have the proper background for Wizards to consider publishing, and they almost always tend to be stupidly overpowered because everyone wants their card to be the best.

1) Miming Mana {2WUBRG} (By Wolfking3000)
Sorcery {Mythic Rare}
Name a color.
For each permanent of the chosen color, each player puts a token onto the battlefield that is a copy of that permanent.
"What seemed like a small force at first, grew to be the most formidable army I have ever laid my eyes on."
-Jurn, Century Commander

Balance: Overall, this is a fairly balanced card. It’s fun to play with. And there’s no way you can abuse it, seeing as it affects all players, and makes you choose one color whilst forcing you to run a five-color deck. I like the balance of it. 5/5
Creativity: Aside from the balance, this is quite a nice card. Very neat, and in sync with the theme: If you want this spell to be good, then Size Matters. 4/5
Flavour: Very flavourful. I like it a lot. I can picture sheer mana warping and twisting into all sorts of creatures and enchantments. 4/5
Form: It’s not perfect (choose a color), but it could be a lot, lot worse. 4/5

2) Vehemence Elemental {3RRGG} (By Senseigold9)

Whenever a creature you control deals damage to another creature, put a +1/+1 counter on each of those creatures.
At the beginning of your end step, you may tap any number of untapped creatures you control. If you do, each of those creatures fight another target creature.
7/5

Balance: Seven mana gives us a 7/5 haste that pumps up all our creatures and acts as some very accurate removal whislt still pumping your guys up. That’s very powerful, I would balance it out a little more by simply removing the “you control” for the +1/+1 counter effect. 3/5
Creativity: Probably one of the best uses of the Fight mechanic that I’ve seen so far. And creative-wise, I think it’s great fun to furtherly enhance that mechanic by making your creatures harder to kill. 5/5
Flavour: No Flavour Text here, but the word Vehemence speaks to me. You can tell it’s a creature that’s looking for a fight, that wants violence and bloodshed, because it only makes it stronger. 4/5
Form: Nothing wrong here. Perfectly in order. 5/5

— Barlod, Mad Scientist
3/3

Balance: All in all, it’s a bit too balanced. The ‘may’ condition is nice to see, but for what it can do, it’s pretty expensive. 3/5
Creativity: Sadly, this reminds me awfully of Suture Ghoul. The Power and Toughness may be a lot higher, but that’s all there is to it. 2/5
Flavour: It has a lot more flavour than Suture Ghoul, however. I like the idea of the mad scientist unleashing his monstrosity on the world. 4/5
Form: It’s good, but I feel that the “this creature’s power and toughness” part could have been done better. 4/5

4) Symbiotic Tide – XXXXUUGG (By Buzz0198)
Sorcery (Mythic)
Put (X) copies of each creature you control onto the battlefield (excluding Legendary Creatures)
"Together we grow, together we fight, with all we march and vanquish enemies in sight"
Balance: I agree that this ability is powerful, but XXXX may be a bit too much. I think replacing two Xs by UG would have been reasonable. At that point, 10 mana would triple your creatures, and maybe add “nontoken” too. 4/5
Creativity: Unlike Miming Mana, this spell doesn’t make you share. This makes it more powerful, but it also costs a lot more, and although this reminds me of a few other cards, like Mirrorweave or Infinite Reflection, this card is different. 5/5
Flavour: I don’t know whether this was your intention, but this card definitely has the ‘Simic’ feel. Chanelling all that mana into your creatures via a massive spell, its Simic right for you. 5/5
Form: It should be “For each nonlegendary creature you control, put X tokens onto the battlefield that are copies of it.” Otherwise, the card explains what it does without any confusion. 4/5
Total: 18/20

5) Decrepit Angel {XBBW} Mythic (by Origami_Munchkin)
Creature - Angel
~ enters the battle field with X +1/+1 counters on it.
Pay 5 life: Double the number of +1/+1 counters on ~.
~ has flying and lifelink as long as it has power and toughness greater than 13.
0/0
Balance: 5 Life is a hefty price to pay to pump her up, but she does benefit from this later on thanks to Lifelink You also have to cast her at quite a high mana to use her without losing too much (seven mana/4 counters to start with, doubled twice is the cheapest mana/life ratio I can think of). 5/5
Creativity: Well, this is a nice card indeed. An Orzhov Angel isn’t uncommon amongst custom cards, but this one is neat. 4/5
Flavour: I can almost sense the flavour from this Angel here. If you want her to help you, you need to help her, and she comes at quite a price. 4/5
Form: Perfect Wording, have a cookie. 5/5

And so, the winners are at a tie. It’s between Origami-Munchkin and Buzz0198 at eighteen points each. But since Origami-Munchkin has already hosted a WitJ blog, I will grant this victory to Buzz0198!

Congratulations. I hope you’ll deliver something really neat for us.
