Winner is the Judge #3
Can you beat the clock?
Posted on: 2/20/2013 6:47 PM By Origami_Munchkin

Welcome to WINNER IS THE JUDGE #3

First off I would like to apologize for getting this up so late. I had a full plate on top of being sick. But enough chit-chat. Let's get this contest under way!

This is how it works:

I will post a theme, and you create a card along those lines. At the end of the week I will choose a winner from among the entries, and that person will create the fourth installment of Winner is the Judge. That person will post a new theme next Monday for all of us here at MTG:Deckbuilder to try and create a card for.

This weeks theme is...

                                   The clock is TICKING

Example:

Llanowar Explosives {1GB}

Artifact

~ enters the battlefield with three charge counters on it.

T, remove a charge counter from ~: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Then if there are no charge counters on ~, each player sacrifices two permanents, loses two life, and discards two cards.

"Not many lived for long once the elves were angered."

Rules and regulations:   **May change depending on current Judge**

One Entry Per Person! Hopefully this will cause people to work extra hard on designing a great card, after all if you only get one shot, you better make it count right?

Also, if you submit a card, you must be willing to win, that means copy/paste this blog and/or redesign it, and come up with a new theme, to be posted next monday.

What i will be looking at while judging:

Balance: A card should not be over powered, or useless, maybe it is a Jack-of-Trades utility card, or maybe it fits a niche deck perfectly(but not brokenly). Leaning too far in either direction on the power scale will lose you points.

Creativity: A card should be interesting to play, or have a unique effect on the game. If your card is boring, you will lose points.

Flavor: How well the card fits into the MTG universe, as well as flavortext, name, and other "Fluff". You will not lose points for not having a flavorful card, but you will earn bonus points if it is extra flavorful.

Form: Try and word your card as closely to what WotC would have done if they were making the card. That is, try and make the wording as simple and concise as possible. If your cards text reads like the reminder text of Banding, you will lose points.

Past Winners:

Week 1:

Trusted Advisor

(2)(U/B)

Creature - Human Wizard

0/3

At the beginning of each upkeep, each player draws a card; then if a player has 8 or more cards in hand, flip Trusted Advisor.

_________________________________________

At the beggining of each upkeep, Evil Vizier deals 5 damage to each player with less than 7 cards in hand.

Week #2:

Juki, Xi's Assassin {1BU} Rare

Legendary Creature - Rat Ninja

Hexproof
1B: Prevent all combat damage that ~ would deal this turn. Put X 1/1 black rat ninja creature token onto the battlefield under your control where X is the amount of damage prevented this way.

GOOD LUCK!

The clock is ticking until doomsday with this card! Card art would be a bunch of meteors flying down and people running for safety!

If you need help with card mechanics, it requires you to exile creatures, including your own. The only way to prevent this is to kill the enchantment. It may seem OP, but It's essentially a board wipe!

P.S. Flbthp is not part of the card, he is just Totally Lost.

Entry is here: http://s14.postimage.org/pdgbqiz01/Explosive_Wall.jpg

I made this for one of my old sets long ago, I thought it would be a nice fit for this competition. Probably a bit overcomplicated for an uncommon but the more of a Vorthos you are the easier it is to understand. Stop thinking about rules and start thinking HOLY THIS IS A WALL MADE OF BOMBS. Well actually, since it's not a creature it's a trench made of bombs. The reason I went this way is because I found having it be a creature would completely upset the power balance, add more stuff to the card when it's already complicated enough and after making it a creature, I could have to add a rule about blowing it up when it died, so no one would actually use the fuse counter part (which is the main focus of this card.) Sure, your opponent's creatures can climb over it but it acts as a powerful deterrent. The reason it is so cheap is because to be used effectively, this will need a large investment of mana but if used right can seriously hamper your opponent.

Overall, I think this card is pretty balanced. If I had anything I would like different for this card it would probably be getting some good card art.

Sorry wrong image, the card is actually here: http://s12.postimage.org/jmn7ihjel/Explosive_Wall.jpg

Age counters are something that work with Cumulative Upkeep ability. At the beginning of each upkeep you add an age counter and then you have to pay X where X is the amount of age counters on it, or it is sacrificed.

Time to announce the winner! I am not going to go in depth with all of the cards like RoarMaster. I will just explain why I chose the card I did.

It came down to Ratface20's Consumer of Worlds, Senseigold9's Sundial of Ages, Subject16's Phyrexian Growth Vats, and ManaLeak' Teferi's Time Bomb.

I felt like Consumer of Worlds would never see play because it is a fairly high cost. Making it a bit smaller would have improved the balance greatly.

Sundial of Ages is just too hard to remove seeing as it doesn't receive any counters itself. But I did like that even if a card was played, it wouldn't be removed instantly.

I had a VERY hard time decided whether Phyrexian Growth Vats or Teferi's Time Bomb should win. Phyrexian Growth Vats fit very well into the world of Phyrexia and Mirrodin. I also liked the fact that anyone could use it and that it would could hurt players and creatures while at the same time help Planeswalkers. Teferi's Time Bomb is nice because it doesn't affect players and it can remove itself if needed. It also had great flavor text. One thing I did not like about it was that it would be almost impossible to pay the cumulative upkeep cost on it. Unless you were running a mana heavy deck, There would be a good chance that you would have to sacrifice it before it could to devastating damage.

In the end I decided on...

Subject16's Phyrexian Growth Vats!
Congratulations to you!

Good job everyone and I wish you all good luck for next week!
