Just randomly thought of this blog and thought it would be interesting to see people creativity... I have a challenge. I want the deckmakers of this webiste to challenge their creativity of making decks into making a new card, one that is balanced, powerful, and doesn't look like you threw random abilities into it to make it good. Consider every aspect of the card before you make it, and make sure it's not broken nor useless. Please make sure to include name, mana cost, card type (if creature, what creature type), whether it's legendary or not, P/T, Abilities, and please do flavor text. Also make the card have flavor so it's also interesting. Finally, make it match one of these themes:
1) Strange spirits seem to be controlling the souls of their victims, turning good into bad and bad into good. Strategies change and only a few are not affected by these strange spirits' power. It's as if the sides of nearly every creature has changed; causing them to change strategies and seek different types of power.
2) Angels, Demons, and Dragons nowfight a war with each other in the skies, letting out no mercy against each other. They fight for their lives and their kind, constantly trying to kill each other. The battle lengthens, and they need to find new ways to defeat each other, whether it be through equipment, enchantments, or stronger beings to finish the battle. They need something to overpower the others. And perhaps, their may be another power to balance everything.
3) Fire burns with more heat than before; light enlightens its people once more with even stronger power; darkness holds and kills those it envelops with even less mercy; nature wakens to a force able to smash even more things in it's path; people who realm in blue magic hold even more strategy than before. Who's to be the strongest to emerge? (mono-colored)
Example of cards I made:
Theme 3 (made a cycle):
Pyrak, Burner of Plains
RRR4
Legendary Creature, Gryer
At the beginning of your upkeep, do 3 damage to target creature. Creatures killed this way cannot be regenerated
Instants and Sorceries you control deal double damage
Haste
5/5
"The scream of those who are burned away by fire is like music to my ears."
Axen, Enlightner of Souls
WWW4
Legendary Creature, Gryer
At the beginning of your upkeep, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature
Creatures you control with a +1/+1 counter have first strike and vigilance
Double Strike
3/5
"The protection of mine is my first priority, the downfall of yours is my second."
Trok, Sustainer of Nature
GGG4
Legendary Creature, Gryer
At the beginning of your upkeep, search your library for a basic land card and put it into play
Converted mana cost of creatures you control is reduced by 1
Trample
6/6
"And they said a tree couldn't hurt."
Hellter, Bringer of Death
BBB4
Legendary Creature, Gryer
At the beginning of your upkeep, all creatures other than Hellter, Bringer of Death, get a -1/-1 counter
Whenever a creature your opponent cotrols dies, he/she loses 1 life
Deathtouch
5/5
"If I can't gain the power, I'll drain the power from everybody else."
Aquel, Thinker of Strategy
UUU4
Legendary Creature, Gryer
At the beginning of your upkeep, draw cards equal to your handsize
You have no maximum handsize
Flash
5/5
"All war is won fair... unless, of course, I join one side."
I think mythic rare would be fair for this creature, simply out of the fact that if you have more life then an opponent you are almost guaranteed to win unless they can remove it. That's also the explanation for the mana cost. I may post some more later on for theme 2. [Report]
Necropotent Demon 2BB You don't draw cards during your draw step. Pay 3 life: Draw a card. Sacrifice a creature: You gain 2 life. Flying 3/2 Mythic Rare
Gotta love that broken card, Necropotence. This is a dumbed-down version. [Report]
URZA, Creator of the legacy.
WWW2
Loyalty points: 3
+ 1: Return target permanent you control and target creature an oponent controls to its owner's hand.
+ 2: Put a "keeper of the legacy" token onto the battlefield, which is a 2/2 golem with "sacrifice this creature, look for an artifact card with cost 3 or less and put it in your hand".
- 10: You win the game.
It has absolutely nothing to do with Urza in any sense, fromt he abilities to the colors to the cost, and even the loyalty points. Urza's legacy was also mostly a Dominaria burnt to a crisp so putting that as a title doesn't make much sense. [Report]
My idea for the first theme was to invert the "standard" themes for each color. For example, red=counter spells, blue=burn spells, white=life pay, black=tokens. However, green is not affected because these "spirits" do not affect the core of nature (green).
Here are a few examples:
Irritating Distraction RR - Instant (uncommon) counter target non-creature spell, deals 1 damage to that spells owner "You know when you get a piece of dirt in your eye? Yea its like that."
Mental breakdown - Sorcery 2UU (rare) Mental breakdown deals 2 damage to each creature, planes-walker, and player. "We all have one every once in a while"
Purifying Demon - creature-demon, 5W (rare), (3/3) Pay 2 life: Place a +1/+1 counter on sun-scarred demon Remove all +1/+1 counters from purifying demon: purifying demon deals that much damage to each non-white creature target player controls
Night Patrol - creature-human, 3B (X/X) When Night Patrol enters play add 2 1/1 black humans into play Night Patrols power and toughness are equal to the number of humans you control
Serene Woods - Enchantment, 2GG (rare) G: Target Creature you control has protection from red, white, blue, and black "In the midst of the cataclysmic change, the earth was determined to stay the same."
The white and black cards might need some adjustment but I think this sort of style would fit in perfectly with theme 1
Spear of Courage - 2 Artifact - Equipment Equipped creature gets +1/+1 for each Demon, Angel, or Dragon your opponents control. Equip 2
Slay the Beast - BB Instant Destroy target creature with power 5 or greater.
Strengthen the Defenses - 2WW Enchantment W: Prevent the next 1 combat damage that would be dealt to target creature you control.
Treadfire Dragon - 4RR Creature - Dragon Flying Whenever Treadfire Dragon deals combat damage to a creature, you may have Treadfire Dragon deal 2 damage to target creature or player. 5/4
Aside from the equipment (might tweak the wording on it later) I might use these for the 2nd mtgdeckbuilder set. Also I'm not quite sure yet if these are balanced as I just made these within a few minutes. [Report]
Wait a bit! 1. Urza was a blue-red mage, but mostly a blue planeswalker. Returning permanents to their owner's hand is a blue cornerstone. 2. The Legacy was a bunch of artifacts designed to protect Dominaria from Phyrexia. Urza can perfectly be linked to an artifact based deck. 3. Karn was made by Urza and it is a silver golem; Therefore, Urza could make other golems to protect the legacy at any time (and it is perfectly reasonable to sac one to bring an artifact) 4. Urza is thought to be the most powerful planeswalker ever. This is why his ultimate simply wins you the game. I bet those guys at Wizards are gonna have a hard time designing him if they ever dare to make his planeswalker card.
So, don't tell me the card I posted has nothing to do with Urza. What do others say? Any back up?
@yshabash I reeaally like that black 1 cost demon you got there. But that Blind Angel looks a little overpowered. It looks a little like Vengeful Archon except so much better because you don't have to pay any mana. [Report]
First strike, lifelink 1W- change target of spell or ability that targets a creature you control to Rathnus. 1U- Rathnus gains hexproof till the end of turn 1G- creatures you control gain +0/+1 and defender till the end of turn
3/3 He hunts the walkers through the planes to keep the balance. [Report]
@The legendary sam However It is important to note that having a white cost is senseless AND Nicol Bolas was (Supposedly) Stronger than Urza so having an ability that beats the pants off of bolas for a cheaper cost seems... Off base [Report]
...
Not sure which theme this is part of, probably 3, butI've always had neat ideas for completing the dryad arbor cycle.
They're basically like manlands with an activation cost {0}; the nice thing about them is that you don't have to say they enter the battlefield tapped, because they already have summoning sickness.
Dryad Arbor
Land Creature - Forest Dryad
1/1
Tors of Kher Keep
Land Creature - Mountain Kobold
{T},Sacrifice Tor of Kher keep; search your library for a mountain and put it onto the battlefield tapped.
When Tor of Kher keep dies, it deals 1 damage to target creature or player and 2 damage to you
Savage Chameleon 3GG Creature-Lizard Intimidate Creatures that share a color with Savage Chameleon block it if able. G: Savage Chameleon becomes the color of your choice until end of turn.
*It has a lot of restrictions because these things are teetering on the edge of brokenedness due to synergy with fetchlands. Dryad arbor was a forest, though, so it would be nice to make the rest of them have land types.
Some of you are probably thinking 'why isn't this a goblin?'Well, it could be. But red has a precedent for 0/1 kobold creatures :)
The next one is simpler:
Shadestalker Fen
Land Creature - Swamp Shade
1BB: Shadestalker Fen gets +1 +1 until end of turn.
0/1
It's a running jokethat Shades (creature with B:this gets +1+1 until eot) are always ubplayable. Obviously, when you put that ability on a land, which a) costs 0 and b) it's a swamp, so you can even search it up with marsh flats, it becomes different. That would be a nice trick: Turn 4, sacrifice marsh flats, fetch it, pump it, block their Geist of St Traft COMPLETELY out of nowhere. Now, maybe the ability could be costed at BB or something, but i'm pretty sure that 1BB is about right. Remember, lands cost 0.
(something to do with drakes or birds, like swarm or something) Atoll
Land creature - Island Drake or Bird
Flying
Defender
0/2
Even simpler yet. This one was easy; lands cost 0, so creature lands should not be more powerful than a creature that costs 0 (they have some other disadvantages and advantages, but broadly speaking ...); dryad arbor is a memnite; therefore an ornithopter land should be okay.
Mind you, ornithopters aren't birds of paradise at the same time (and can't be fetched by misty rainforest etc. etc. :/) ; so it has defender to take away the other use birds of paradise has; picking up a sword and giving green a really good flyer suddenly.
Thompan, the Possessor 2WWBB Legendary Creature-Demon Spirit Flying T: Sacrifice Thompan, the Possessor, switch target creature's power and toughness. You gain control of that creature. It gains "When this creature dies, return Thompan, the Possessor to the field under your control." and "Sacrifice this creature: put a +1/+1 counter on Thompan, the Possessor when he returns to the field." 2/2
"The ghost of a demented demon whose name is long forgotten, Thompan took up a new name and claims the souls and names of others." [Report]
Astral Construct enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
When Astral Construct enters the battlefield, exile target permanent with converted mana cost X or lower. Return it to it's owner's control at the beginning of the next end step. At the beginning of the next upkeep, exile target permanent with converted mana cost 1 less than the previous permanent exiled with Astral Construct. Return it to it's owner's control at the beginning of that turn's end step. Repeat this process until there are no legal targets for this ability.
1/1
" The angels believe it to be a protector of the innocent, the demons think it a judge of the guilty, and the dragons, a scourge of the weak. But I merely say that it is a traveller, passing through our corner of eternity."-Serra [Report]
Creature- Spirit Hunter Shadow, First Strike When Spectral Ghost-buster enters the battlefield, choose a target creature and opponent controls. That creature has shadow as long as Spectral Ghost-buster is in play.
Freak Wildfire deals X damage to all creatures, destroys X target lands each player controls and deals X damage to all players. This damage can not be prevented or redirected. All creatures dealt damage this way can't be regenerated.
Jace's Focus Enchantment 1U If it's your turn, activated abilities of planeswalkers you control can be activated any time you could cast an instant. [Report]
@thelegendarysam:
i think that having two abilities that add loyalty counters is a bit broken with an ultimate being that strong so maybe if you took away one of the abilities that add loyalty counters and add one that subtracts some [Report]
sorry for multiple posts but heres another 4 theme 2:
Demonic Morphling 3RWB(mythic rare)
demonic morphling counts as an angel and dragon as well as a demon
flying, vigilance, lifelink
R:demonic morphling gets +2/+0 until end of turn
again sorry for multiple posts he is a 4/4
flvaor text: "His form was like that of the most beautiful angel, the fiercest dragon, and the most maccabre demon"-arch-fiend hunter, Kar-Ule [Report]
Siyette, the Absolver 10wU Angel Cleric When Siyette enters the battlefield, destroy all demons, then gain control of all dragons. Siyette costs 1 less for each angel in your graveyard. 5/5 "When she saw her fallen comrades, she channelled their energy into a blast that spread her influence across the plane." [Report]
Theme 2:
Brace of Binding Spirits
5
Artifact - Equipment
Equipped creature is a demon, dragon, and angel in addition to it's other types and is all colors
Equipped creature has flying, vigilance, fist strike, and trample
2: Equipped creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn.
If equipped creature dies, return it to your hand
Equip 6
"Now it's just a game of who gets it first." [Report]
you know my card can be for theme 1 or 2, because he's a demon. I think i'll change the flavor text to: " His name long forgot, he is the ghost of a demented demon killed in the war. Taking the name on Thompan, he claims the souls and names of others." [Report]
Rare, Human Shaman 3WRR (1/3) First Strike RRWWX tap: Put X -1/-1 counters on target creature, remove a -1/-1 counter from that creature each turn, once the creature has no more -1/-1 counters on it, put X +1/+1 counters on that creature. Phyrexian Purifier doesn't untap during your untap step until all -1/-1 counters are removed
"Let the Gitaxians be with their "Surgery" fire is as good a tool as any." [Report]
Possession X (When this creature dies, take control of target creature. At the beginning of each end step, if the controlled creature's power is greater than X, return it to it's owner's control.)
This goes only on Spirit type creatures, and works like this: A spirit with possession 5 dies on your main phase 1, takes control of a primeval titan. Now, if you somehow manage to lower its power, you get to keep it. If you can't lower it's power, then it "breaks" free from your control.
Ovbiosly, it's a very powerful ability, so slap it on weak and expensive spirits. [Report]
souls of the gray pt 2/6 cost 2w2b2colorless abilities; the forsaken 5: when this creature dies if it was the only creature you control search your deck for any number of creatures with a combined mana cost less than the forsaken cost and put them onto the battlefield tapped. rarity: rare
"between the pure and corrupt here we stand the forgotten" [Report]
Forgotten Commoner: UUU Unblockable Unseen: When this creature deals combat damage to a player look at the top three cards of your library place one of those cards into your hand the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. 2/2 "The commoners always have the best information my lord. No one suspects the begger to hear all." The King's Council Rare [Report]
